Liza Regina Mousias
Liza Regina Mousios is a composer, lyricist, orchestrator and playwright whose music has been featured on multiple media outlets.
Ms. Mousios started composing at the age of three; at age almost four she started creating theatrical works which were all about animals. She studied composition, piano and orchestration at West Virginia University. After graduation, she studied at the Jazz Cultural Theater in Manhattan under music legend, Barry Harris. She also pursued private studies with jazz icon, Walter Bishop, Jr., refining her theory and harmonic sensitivities. She double-billed in concert with Walter Bishop, Jr., and went on to perform with many jazz greats, including Connie Kay of the Modern Jazz Quartet, drummer, Joe Jones, Jr., Connie Henry, former bassist with John Coltrane, and Roy Cumming, bassist for Al Haig.
In 1987, Ms. Mousios began formal studies in film and documentary scoring with Academy Award Winner, Joe Renzetti. Mr. Renzetti was so impressed with her talent that he asked her to assist with some of his film projects.
Under the ENJA label, Ms. Mousios recorded her original compositions and jazz standards with such notables as Grammy Award Winner and World Virtuoso Award Winner, George Young, and world-renowned trumpeter, Herb Robertson.
After being injured in an accident by a drunk driver, Ms. Mousios was left unable to perform as a pianist. It was then that she turned her focus to composing and arranging.
Ms. Mousios received top billing for the “Vibe of the Venue” composers’ symposium, premiering four of her pieces.
Ms. Mousios composed the music, lyrics and arrangement of "September 11th Remembered " shortly after the tragedy. "September 11th Remembered" has been performed at Opera America in New York, It has also been performed in Jersey City, the Garden of Reflection for 9/11 Victims and for the U.S. military.
She composed the theme for the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, and this musical piece was broadcast to all 57 national parks.
She was a popular composer, orchestrator and lyricist for the Liberty Orchestra, based in Lambertville, New Jersey. Her music has been featured extensively on California Public Radio. Her music was also featured in the KIDE/Public Radio documentary, "Hearts and Minds of U.S. Veterans."
Walter MacNicoll, Director of the Opera Project, characterized Ms. Mousios as "one of the most important composers of the last 50 years," also lauding her lyrics.
Frederick C. Lyman, Jr., a former music and jazz critic for The Yale News, described Ms. Mousios as “one of the most important musical thinkers of her generation.”
In another critique of some of Ms. Mousios' later work, Mr. Lyman wrote, "Her music can be likened to no other with the possible exception of the Renaissance composer, Carlo Gesualdo, who has baffled scholars for centuries."
Ms. Mousios is the composer, orchestrator, lyricist, playwright and stage director of “Akhenaten the Musical“ and The Three Plucky Pigs”. WDVR broadcast a revue of both musicals. The Newtown Chamber Orchestra has accepted” The Three Plucky Pigs” for future performances. PBS Television gave this musical rave reviews, and accepted it in late 2024 pending funding.
In December 2021, two of Ms. Mousios’ compositions and orchestrations were performed by the Newtown Chamber Orchestra.
Her CD of original compositions “Animal Passion, which is on You Tube, has received multiple Five-Star critiques.
Ms. Mousios is currently working as composer, lyricist, orchestrator, playwright,
dramaturg and stage director on a musical about the life of Harriet Tubman. One of her jazz compositions will be recorded by guitarist Joe Battaglia in 2025. Baritone Joseph Eaton (cousin of Whitney Houston) will be performing some of her jazz pieces in August 2025.

- Film legend Marni Nixon licensed two of my pieces, “Music is a Girl's Best Friend “and “Humpty -Dumpty Heart” for a recording. Unfortunately, Marni Nixon passed away before the project could be completed.
- As stated in her bio, California Public radio broadcast roughly 15 of her pieces for its show “Poetry Basket”.
- One particular show extensively featured music from her original “Akhenaten the Musical”.
- Her piece “September 11thRemembered “was featured in the KIDE documentary “Hearts and Minds of US Veterans”.
- In 2023 and 2024 she composed various pieces and film cues for a documentary which is in limbo due to budgetary problems.
- Jazz guitarist Joe Battaglia is licensing “Flora’s Jellyfish.”
- Whitney Houston's cousin, baritone Joseph Eaton will be performing several of her pieces in August 2025 in New Jersey.
