About The Expert

John Shomby

For more than four decades, John Shomby has been the steady hand and creative mind behind some of the most successful stations in the country. From Augusta to Honolulu, Dallas to Portland, and everywhere in between, John has programmed nearly every format you can name — TOP 40, Country, Rock, Sports Talk, Classic Hits, R&B, even Contemporary Gospel — building brands, launching stations, and helping talent thrive in every market.

Now based in Nashville, John has shifted his focus to what he’s most passionate about: coaching and mentoring the next generation of radio programmers, on-air talent, and artists. Through his “Radio 101” program, John has become a go-to resource for emerging country artists like Jelly Roll, Elvie Shane, Restless Road, John Morgan, Hannah Ellis, HunterGirl, and Larry Fleet, guiding them through the ins and outs of the radio world. He also manages rising country singer/songwriter Faith Schueler, helping shape her career as she builds her name in the industry.
Beyond coaching and management, John serves as a consultant and columnist for Monday Morning Intel and Radio Ink, is the talent coach and executive producer for the Backstage Country syndicated show (heard in over 80 markets), and works closely with artists and managers in the CMT Equal Access initiative.

A respected industry voice, John has been part of Nashville’s Leadership Music since 2010 and has served on the Country Radio Broadcasters Board of Directors since 2005, where he’s held the role of Vice President since 2019.

Ask anyone who’s worked with him, and they’ll tell you the same thing: John doesn’t just teach radio — he lives it, loves it, and uses it to inspire everyone he coaches to find their voice and make their mark.
